Wagamama’s katsu curry is the very definition of a crowd-pleasing dish. But the chain has gone wildly off-piste with the launch of a new katsu product that merges sweet and savoury… a smoothie. Wagamama has brought out the drink with the aim of getting young people walking and talking in support of charity YoungMinds – which recently found that 67% of youngsters with previous mental health problems believe the pandemic will have a long-term negative effect on their mental wellbeing. The smoothie will be offered in 20 restaurants, located in key university cities all over the UK, between March 24 and April 7 – with all proceeds going to YoungMinds. Steve Mangleshot, global exec chef at Wagamama, said: ‘We have seen our katsu curry being ordered as the ultimate comfort food during lockdown. So our challenge was how can we take our most iconic dish and create something that young people can enjoy on-the-go with a friend whilst we can’t welcome guests onto our benches.’ However, fans seem unconvinced by the new beverage and many loyal followers were quick to make their opinions known after the restaurant shared the news on Instagram.
One person replied: ‘Not so sure about this.’ While another added: ‘Mmmmmm imagine the breath from that.’ Someone else commented: ‘I mean I do love a katsu chicken, but do I love it enough to drink a katsu smoothie hmmm?’

But others seem to be intrigued by the new drink. One person wrote: ‘Interesting… what does it taste like? Savoury smoothies?’ Another individual said: ‘Yummy this would make such a nice mixer.’ It looks like the jury’s still out on this one – but the charitable cause is applauded.
